Homework:
– Sew (2) 12" finished blocks, one for each side of the tote (blocks will be 12 1/2" X 12 1/2"
square)
– Cut all fabric below

Materials:
Two completed 12" blocks (blocks are “finished" sizes)
I use one of the two patterns below:

1. the 12" “Autumn Splendor" block from the 1998 “The Block Book" by Judy Martin
2. the 12" block from the “Farmhouse Retreat" block from the April 2024 American
Patchwork and Quilting magazine

Yardages and cutting instructions are based on 42" of usable fabric width. I use mostly scraps.

Fabric Needed:

1/4 yard of fabric for the 12" block’s 1/2" border (I like to use a bold/dark fabric to stand out)
3/4 yard of fabric for the bottom panel, side panels and straps
-If using directional fabric for the side panels, cut (4) strips 3 1/2 X 15 1/2
3/4 yard of fabric for the inner lining (muslin or off-white fabric)
1 yard of batting for the quilted blocks and panels
1 yard of fabric for lining and pockets

Cut fabric and batting:

From the 12" block border fabric:
Cut (4) 1" X 12.5" strips for the sides of 12" blocks.
Cut (4) 1" X 13.5" strips for top & bottom of 12" blocks.

From the bottom panel, side panels and strap fabric:
Cut (1) 4 1/2" X 13" strip for the bottom panel
Cut (2) 3 1/2" X 30 1/2 strips for side panels
Cut (3) 4" strips across the width of fabric for straps

From the inner lining fabric:
Cut (1) 21 1/2" X 32 1/2" panel for the inner lining

From the batting:
Cut (1) 21 1/2 X 32 1/2 panel for the inner lining
Cut (2) 1 3/4 X 25" strips for the straps

From the lining fabric:
Cut (1) 19 1/2" X 30 1/2" panel for the lining
Cut (2) 7" squares for lining pocket

Instructions: (Bring all items above to class. You will need to have all pieces cut out).
